“SOLD”
SPORTSMEN’S EAGER DASH TO WAIKATO 200 SEATS OFFERED When it became known through the city that “chits” had been issued to early members of the queue outside Watts’s sports depot 32 hours before booking had been advertised to open •and that only about 80 men had actually secured the coveted passes, someone did some quick thinking. Even it every man had reserved the fail number of six seats allowed, this would make less than 500 seats taken —and what was being done about the remainder of the accommodation? Then it began to be freely stated among the crowd that 200 tickets for the British match were being offered for sale in Hamilton. Taxi men heard of the situation early and offered to take parties through to the Waikato at a charge of £5 10s, and there were many disappointed sportsmen in Auckland only too willing to go to this additional expense. Groups hurled themselves into the waiting cars and dashed madly away on their 82-mile journey. Traffic inspectors along the Great South Road would have secured a good haul yesterday and would have paid their wages handsomely had they been “trapping,” for it is probable that the Auckland-Hamilton record fell many times as ■ fhe eager football followers raced to the booking office. Here disappointment awaited them. As the late comers reached the scene the faster travellers were already turning away and the one word “sold” was heard on every side. “Sold” indeed —but not in the grammatical sense of the word—for ,tlie 200 seats that were offering had not been booked. ' They were tickets for the game against the Waikato-Thames Valley-King Country representatives at Hamilton on August 2. It was a less enthusiastic procession that, returned at a moderate pace to the city.
