PROTEST WITHDRAWN
After Havering and Prince of Orange had staged their desperate finish in the, Onslow Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, the connections of the second horse lodged a protest against Havering on the ground that it was not trained by a licensed trainer. The judicial committee had been discussing the matter for a time when it was announced that it was desired on behalf of the Prince of Orange party to withdraw the protest, therefore the inquiry lapsed; but in the meantime the green flag had been hoisted over the big semaphore and this meant that the protest had been sustained. By this time dividends had already been paid out to a large number of backers of the first and second horses, and the green was flying in the breeze for five minutes before it was taken down, and the brown flag (protest dismissed), run up. There was plenty of excitement at the prematuro announcement that Havering had been “outed.” But what was up with the semaphore men? Were they colour blind or just good Irishmen?.
