DRUNKEN MAN ARRESTED IN EMPTY HOUSE
“I was just lying down out of the way,” explained James Whitting, charged at the Police Court this morning with being found without lawful excuse in the enclosed premises of 54 Airedale Street. Whitting was fined £2. Described as a labourer, aged 64, Whitting pleaded guilty to the charge. He also admitted that lie was drunk. Sub-Inspector Shanahan said accused had been found by constable at 3.35 this morning asleep in an empty house. The house was under police supervision as undesirables were in the habit of sleeping there. Nothing was known against accused. He had £7 in his possession so there was no need for him to sleep out. Whitting expressed his sorrow, but had nothing further to say. He had come to Auckland seeking work after being employed by the Public Works Department at Mercury Bay. “He is liable to imprisonment, but he got drunk and did not know what he was doing,” decided Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., imposing a fine of £2. On the drunkenness charge Whitting was fined 10s.
