The Government Kducation Bill, which proposes to raise the school leaving age from 14 to 15 years, was debated on the second reading in the House of Commons today. The President of the Board of Kducation. Sir Charles Trevelyan, in explaining its scope. said that by giving another year's schooling to more than 400.000 children, the competition of children in the labour market would incidentally be reduced. Work would thus be provided for very many people who were now receiving unemployment benefit, and there would be a saving of £3,000,000 in unemployment benefit. The total cost of raising the school ago would be £5.500.000. To accommodate the children, in view of the proposed change in th»‘ leaving age. 100 new schools were being built, and 350 schools were being enlarged. The House passed the second reading of the Bill by 280 votes to 223.
