CATTLE ON FOOTPATHS

DROVERS’ DIFFICULTIES DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL A large deputation of farmers and drovers, introduced by Mr. A. W. ITall. M.P. for Hauraki. waited on the Otahuhu Borough Council last evening, and placed before the council the difficulty experienced in keeping cattle off the footpaths, while driving them* to the saleyards from districts south of Otahuhu. Mr. Hall said the question 1 had been brought to a head by two farmers receiving a summons for allowing cattle on the footpaths. He said it was a most difficult thing to bring cattle through Otahuhu and keep them off the paths. There was a difference of opinion among the drovers as to what should be done, lie claimed that with fast motor traffic using the roads, it was impossible to keep the cattle off the footpaths Air. Cox,, another member of the deputation, said the drovers were up against a difficult proposition With the motor traffic on the road it was impossible to keep a mixed mob off the paths. Mr. Hall said they all realised the necessity of the by-law, and promised to assist the council in every way, but ho asked that the inspector be instructed to operate on a straight road, where a careful drover could keep the cattle off the path. The Mayor said that things had got to such a stage that steps had to be taken for the protection of pedestrians, especially women and children. Action was not being taken with the idea of harassing the drovers, but for the protection of the Ratepayers. After the deputation had withdrawn it was decided that the council take no action in withdrawing the prosecutions, and that the inspector be instructed to continue supervision of the borough.
