HAMILTON CROWDED

POPULARITY OF WINTER SHOW SCHOOL DRILL CONTESTS From Our Own Cori'espondent HAMILTON, Thursday. Wintry conditions in the form of a bitterly cold wind and heavy showers have militated against the attendances at the Waikato Winter Show, and the gate takings on the first two days show a marked decrease. Despite the opposition of the elements, the town is still crowded with visitors with a preponderance of dairy men and breeders. The immense importance of the show can be realised when it is stated that buyers from nearly every quarter of the Dominion were present today at Ranstead Brothers’ annual sale of milking Shorthorns at Matangi The fixture was highly successful, many high prices being realised. Rain or shine, the carnival spirit was in evidence as much as ever throughout the day, the festoons cf coloured electric lights over the main street and suspended along the traffic bridge lending a distinctly bright note. Hundreds of show patrons when the doors were closed last evening, flocked to a “midnight matinee” conducted by one of the local talkie houses. One of the features of the show today was the annual physical drill competition for primary school children held at the Theatre Royal. Competition was keen throughout, and the displays were of a. high standard. Hamilton East School gained the Howden Challenge Cup for most points. Only one point separated the Hamilton West and Frankton Schools. The points were awarded as follow: East, 15; West, 10; Frankton, 9; HiUcrest, 5; Forest,-Lake, 3. The social side of the big conference of dairy factory managers was introduced this evening by a successful smoke concert at which many toasts were honoured. A great number of show officials, judges, stewards and visitors were present. Another fine musical programme was contributed at the show this evening by the show orchestra. Other items which attracted a good deal of attention were solos by Mrs. Elvy and Mr. H. Brummell, and an exhibition of latest ballroom dancing by Miss Madge Grace’s pupils. An exhibit which has excited considerable comment is a display of lemons from the Tauranga district. They are perfect specimens of the citrus, well-shaped and sized and of excellent flavour. Many show patrons have commented on the quality and comprehensiveness of the Government exhibits in the forestry and agricultural sections «of the exhibition. Here, more than a glimpse is obtained of the valuable research work carried on and the progress made of recent years.
