NGATARINGA GIRLS’ CLUB ORGANISES GAY COSTUME EVENING

STANLEY BAY FUNCTION

On Wednesday evening the Ngataringa Girls’ Hockey Club held a very enjoyable plain and fancy dress dance in the Ngataringa Tennis Club Hall, Stanley Bay, which had been artistically decorated for the occasion with coloured streamers and balloons. The proceeds are to go to the club funds. During supper Cr. C. M. Browne, the club president, in a short speech, thanked all those who had helped to male© the dance the success it was, and in complimenting the club on its successful entry into Auckland hockey said the club would welcome any new playing members. VICE-REGAL VISIT

LADY BLEDISLOE ATTENDS MOTHERS’ LEAGUE

Yesterday morning-, her Excellency Lady Bledisloe, accompanied by Mrs. A, T. Bathurst, attended the quarterly meeting of the League of Mothers, which was held in the social room of the Y.W.C.A. Mrs. PI. D. Crump, secretary for the Mount Eden branch, acted as secretary to the league, in the absence of the assistant secretary, Mrs. Furness. A new move on the part of the league was that of welcoming mothers arriving from overseas. Mrs. J. Hiddleston gave an interesting report on her work as representative of the league on the national council. The resignation of Mrs. Arey, secretary of the league, through illness, was received with regret. On arrival her Excellency was met by Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, provincial president of the league, Mrs. A. AT. Fergusson, Mrs. P. A. Lindsay and Mrs. A. G. Talbot, vice-presidents. Mrs. Mitchell, on behalf of the league, presented Lady Bledisloe with a bouquet of violets, maidenhair fern and autumn leaves and asked her to accept a membership badge. The president stated that the members were all encouraged by the interest her Excellency took in the league. AIMS OF LEAGUE In expressing her thanks to the speakers, her Excellency said that the ideals and aims of the league had her complete sympathy. On her way out to New Zealand she had met Lady Alice Fergusson and had been specially asked by her to look after the League of Mothers. Her Excellency stated that she was willing to do all that was within her power to do for it. Slio hoped that the . organisation would see that religion was taught in the homes, as she sincerely believed that a religious foundation was necessary for children. and that ideals based on such a foundation would make happy homes, happy mothers, happy children and a prosperous New Zealand-

Afternoon Reception

Vicc-Rcgal Function THEIR EXCELLENCIES ENTERTAIN A largely-attended afternoon reception was given by their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe at Government House yesterday afternoon, the function proving a very happy one. Flowers brightened every available corner in the reception rooms and the fragrance of early violets scented the warm atmosphere. The guests were received by their Excellencies in the drawing-room, ■where tall vases of beautiful bronze chrysanthemums were charmingly arranged, and the warmth of a cheery log fire contrasted pleasantly with the cold bleakness outdoors. Lady Bledisloe’s gown was of dahlia red flat crepe with flounced skirt edged with fine pleating, Touches of ivory at the neck and wrists were the only relief, and with it she wore a golden fox fur and a smart upturned felt hat of matching red. Mrs. A. T. Bathui'st was wearing a frock of blue lace, with black brocaded satin coat and a black straw hat. Mrs. A. CL Day had on a ravenswing blue velvet ensemble trimmed with grey fur, black lace scarf and blue velvet toque with ospreys. Miss Gillespie’s pretty frock was of navy georgette, with cream collar and cuffs, and with it she wore a navy felt hat. The members of his Excellency's staff, Major Bathurst, Mr. A. C. Day. Sir John Hanham and Lieutenant Elworthy, assisted in entertaining the guests. The walls of the ballroom, in which tea was served, were screened with bamboo and hanging baskets of fern added a graceful touch. Autumnshaded chrysanthemums were arranged on the tables and foliage and fern, intermingled with which were vivid poinsettias, banked the stage where the orchestra was stationed. The Te Puke Lawn Tennis Club held its annual dance in McDowell's Hall. Music was supplied by the "Gloom - chasers’ Orchestra” from Whakatano. Extras were played by Miss Riley and Mr. Mollgaard.
