HAWERA WORK
HORSES FOR AUCKLAND Very little work of importance has been performed on the Hawera tracks since the Wanganui meeting, but with the Auckland and Otaki meetings looming ahead work from now onward should be of a very interesting nature (says the “Hawera Star”). On Saturday morning the Otaki and Auckland engaged horses were sent along a bit more seriously, though little fast work was attempted. The trial grass was workable, but most exercise was accomplished on the sand. J. Fryer’s team for Auckland will comprise Airtight, Copey and Mendip. The same trainer will have a team of four competing at Otaki. On Saturday morning Mendip went twice round at half pace, working in good style. Kiosk. Just So, Banbridge, and Mount Shannon were also given strong work. Captain Gazeley worked on the sand, but was sore on walking off. Silvermine was given light exercise on the inside oval, a number of other horses using this part for pottering about on. Maidos was given strong pace work. The Warden and Valpre were given a working gallop on the trial grass. The hunters, Copey (Tucker) and Son o’ Mine (Cook), set out to jump six of the big fences, but the display was not impressive, Son o’ Mine stopping at the second fence and Copey dropping his rider. They were set going again and completed the journey safely, afterward jumping the double again in better style.
