KAMEHAMEHA’S CHANCE

“WRITE-YOUR-OWN PRICE” Ellerslie's old hope. Kamehameha, has no pretensions to class in the ’chasing line, but it is generally agreed ! that he is a possibility in his engagements next week, even to possessing a fair chance in the great jumping event, the Great Northern Steeplechase. Put a certain mild question to well-known parties not more than 100 miles from Queen Street relative to Kamehameha, and back will come the whisper, “500 to 1 the two Northerns.” A glance through his record reveals that he has won only one steeplechase, and that a hack race, while all other engagements have been a succession of “accidents” or “incidents,” with the only exception a second to Bright Land I in the Remuera Plurdles at the winter meeting 12 months ago. He is a case in point of a horse failing when honours seem likely to fall thick upon his shoulders, and mention need be made only of his race in the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie last month. Placed in a winning position through a chapter of falls, he played an old dodge, that of baulking, lie also did this in the Winter Steeplechase 12 months ago when in a winning position. Perhaps with a horseman up who knows him. Kamehameha may come good, and here is an opportunity for J. Mcßae to show he has lost none of his skill during his two years' absence from the saddle. D. Moraghan. the owner-trainer of Kamehameha, nas the jumper doing splendidly for his engagements, while he is one of the few horses which have failed to cause anxiety for his mentor.
