OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL
It was decided at the Otaliuhu Borough Council last evening to support a proposal of the Papatoetoe Town Board, to make application for the Auckland Electric-Power Board's district to be divided into wards. An application from the district engineer of the Xew Zealand Railways for permission to obtain a supply of water from an abandoned reservoir and well in Sturges Park was referred to the Works Committee. When a letter from the Xew Zealand Grand Lodge of the International Order of Good Templars was read, drawing the council’s attention to the grave and growing evil of allowing drinking in dance halls and cabaretin various parts of the Dominion, the Mayor said that although he attended a number of public functions in Otnhuhu. he had never seen intoxicating liquor in evidence. Mr. Hunter: Well if Otahuhu Is free, there are a lot of liars about. I have heard quite a lot about the hip flHsk being in evidence at dances in Otahuhu. Mr. Pearce: I have never seen anvthing of the kind in Otahuhu. The clerk was authorised to advi the lodge the trouble referred tc is not evident in Otahuhu. A recommendation from the Works Committee that all of the roads in the borough be raised to fourth-class was adopted. A further recommendation that Portage Road b* raised from fourth-class to first-class was referred back to the commit' ee for further consideration. The Mayor made reference to the deaths of the Rev. T. 11. Currie arid Canon H. Mason, ex-residents of Otahuhu. and at his request councillors stood in silence for one minute.
