Flying Swift Nips His Owner
CASE FOR THE HOSPITAL TE AWAMUTU' TRAINED ’CHASER An injury of rather an unusual nature occurred in Wanganui last week as a result of a playful bite by a horse. The horse in question was Flying Swift, which won the Grandstand Steeplechase at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting. When attending to the horse the owner, Mr. W. L. Thomson, was holding its head while the rug was beingstripped off by a boy. A Nasty Kiss Apparently the horse was affrighted as a result and nipped at Mr. Thomson, lacerating his lower lip to such an extent that medical attention was necessitated. Later Mr. Thomson was admitted to the Wanganui Hospital, where a minor operation was performed, several stitches being inserted. On inquiry being made last Saturday it was ascertained that the patient was progressing as satisfactorily as could be expected. ‘Apropos of Flying Swift’s surprise win at Wanganui, one finds no mention that the credit lor this gelding’s
success should be given to the Te Awamutu trainer, H. L. Russell. It was this mentor that put the polish on Flying Swift for' Mr. W. L. Thornsou, and tuned the horse up, for he was located at Te Awamutu for some time prior to going to Wanganui. Trainer Russell gave Flying Swift a couple of races over the sticks at the Ohinemuri meeting a couple of months ago. He was tailed off the first day, and on the second day he was out in front forcing the pg.ee for over half the journey. These two outings played a big part in Flying Swift’s preparation for ’chasing, and at his second start subsequently he won an open steeplechase. This big gelding was commented upon at Paeroa as likely to develop into a first-class performer over the big fences.
