GERMAN FLAG FOUND
MAY BE HISTORIC RELIC BROUGHT FROM SAMOA Press Association PALMERSTON >T.. Wednesday. A German flag, somewhat age-worn and more or less moth-eaten, was found at Rangiotu several weeks ago. It is stated that a member of the Samoan force, who later joined the Rifle Brigade, which was in camp at Rangiotu. smuggled the flag back as a souvenir and when he left for the front handed it to a Rangiotu resident for safe keeping. The soldier lias not so far returned and the Rangiotu resident recently died in the belief that the flag might * be an historic one taken down from i the German headquarters at Samoa. It is asserted that the soldier owning it • claimed it was. t Relatives of the Rangiotu resident : had it handed over to the local Returned Soldiers’ Association, which is * now making inquiries. An examioas tion of the flag shows it is the worse . for wear, being frayed at the edges. It i has no eagle crest and may have been ' the property of a private German resi- • dent and not the flag it is claimed to be.
