SOUTHLAND MEETING SNOWFALL’S STEEPLECHASE Special to THE SUN INVERCARGILL. Wednesday. The Southland Racing Club's, first winter meeting, hitherto an autumn fixture held prior to Easter, opened today in overcast but fine weather. The sting w ds out of the ground as a. result of a shower during the early morning, but the track was very firm, with good going for this period of the i year in southern districts. Conse- j que-ntly. the times for the various events were up to summer standard. The totalisator handled £11,216, an ] increase of £2,020. Roslyn Handicap Palermo, first favourite for the Roslyn Hack Handicap, was well clear of the coupled pair. Attractive Lady and Miss Kedowa. Over the greater portion of the journey Attractive Lady was in command from Bachelor Boy, Battle Maid and Palermo. *At the turn Battle Maid took charge and went on to win by two and a-half lengths, i Meitui came from the back to cut Palermo (who was weakening) out of second place. Banner Boy was close up fourth, then Miss Redowa. The winner is an Australian-bred mare owned and trained in Invercargill. New River Trot The New River Trot resolved into a duel over the last mile and a-half betxveen Lady Freeman and ImperiaJ Bingen, who left the field at the turn. Imperial Bingen (by Nelson Bingen— Lady Elf) drew away to win by four lengths. Spring Chimes was five lengths off third. The winner is owned and trained In Invercargill. The times were: 4.46 2-5, 4.47 2-5, 4.49. Trial Stakes Jn the Trial Stakes Night. Parade . was favourite from Bitractor and Night Lark. Bridget made the running throughout to the straight, but below the distance she weakened. Night Lark showed out. but swerved, and Milliner got up to beat her by a length. Cough, who finished well back, was placed third, but Zelanian appeared to be there, with Night Parade fourth. and then Bitractor. The winner is by Some Boy II. —Topsy Knight, trained and owned in Invercargill. Flying Handicap Meadow Lark (B. Brodie) was first fancy for the Flying Handicap, with Red Boa about 330 chances off in second place, closely pressed by the coupled pair. Lucky Light gt.nd Apache. From a good start Rin Tin Tin was first to show out from Caterpillar and Red Boa. Always holding his own across the top Rin Tin Tin led Caterpillar, Full Fling and Red Boa in close order to the straight, and going on, Rin Tin Tin won by nearly two lengths from Full Fling, with the fast-finish-ing Lucky Light a length off third. Then came Red Boa. It was officially reported that the rider of Meadow Lark got a stone in his eye shortly after the start and was unable afterward to 9ontrol his mount. Southland Cup For the Southland Cup Red Sea was first fancy, carrying about 280 chances more than Black Duke, with Circulation 27S tickets off in third plaxse; but there were strong followings for Wiugatui and Camisader. Red Racer was the early leader, but at the mile Camisader took charge from Red Racer, Evening and Wingatui, while Black Duko was last. There was change at the back, but crossing the top Black Duke moved up. The field bunched at the home turn, Red Racer and Camisader being together just l heading Evening and Red Sea. In the . run to the judge Camisader won by ! tfiree-quarters of a length from Red ; Racer, with Evening a neck away | third. Black Duke was galloping fast ! into fourth place, and then came Circulation, Wingatui and Red Sea. The favourite faded out in the run home. The winner is trained at Wingatui bv C. Giesler.
