OBSTACLES ON LINE
SPIKES BETWEEN RAILS ' From. Our Own Correspondent PAPATOETOE, Today. A number of railway “dogs’* were found driven between the joints of the rails, and a number of fish-plates jammed across the rails, on the line at Mahia. near Manurewa, yesterday. The spikes were about five inches loug, and are used for fastening the rails, to the sleepers. The discovery was made by gangers proceeding to their work on the duplication work. It is not known whether any trains passed over the obstacles.
The chief danger of the spikes between the rails would be to prevent the expansion of the rails with heat.
