STOREMAN’S THEFTS
“UNDER SPELL OF ANOTHER MAN” REMANDED FOR SENTENCE The theft of large quantities of wheat, oats, chaff and maize from the bond store of A. S. Paterson and Company, of which he was storeman, was admitted by Dominic Daniel Petty, aged 40, on appearing in the Police Court today. He was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. The thefts occurred between October 1 and April 10 and the value of the goods taken was £214 7s 6d. The grain belonged to the National Mortgage hnd Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd. According to Detective-Sergeant Kelly, Petty had been custodian of the store for some time. Various clients stacked their grain there and when they desired to remove it, orders had to be presented to the storeman and it had to be signed for on delivery being taken. When a cheek of the grain in store was made on April 8 a considerable amount was found to be missing, besides benzine and oil. Accused said he was under the spell of another man who had received both the grain and oil from him at well below value. Accused was remanded for a week for sentence, bail being renewed meantime.
