RAISING OF BRIDGE

REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE REFUSED HARBOUR BOARD AFFAIRS Tbs raising of No. 2 bridge on the waterfront road at Hobson Bay, in order to allow the passage of small craft, will not be contributed to financially by the Auckland Harbour Board. This was a decision made at a meeting of the board held yesterday afternoon. A letter was received from the district engineer of the Public Works Department asking whether the board would assist financially in raising the bridge, and intimating that there was a moral obligation toward boat-owners. • The board has formerly been advised that the department and the City Council would bear the cost of the bridge. The board has done its share in demanding no compensation for the road,” said Mr. M. H. Wynyard, chairman. An amendment to refer the question to tho board-in-committee was defeated, and tho motion to decline to contribute was passed. QUAY STREET BUILDING It was reported by 'the Works Committee that the plan of the threestoreyed building to be erected at the Quay Street landings had been submitted by tho architects. The building, which is to be constructed in permanent materials, and to be 360 feet in length, represents a move in the direction of replacing the temporary offices along the waterfront with permanent buildings. The building will take in the present waterside workers’ quarters, wilj span the entrance of Northern Wliaff, and will approach King’s Wharf. It is intended that the building will accommodate the waterside workers, the central pay office, stevedores’ gear, and customs and oth<fr services. A special archway is to be constructed to give access to the Northern Wharf. It was decided to approve of the plan of the building, and to proceed with the erection of the western portion up to the archway during the present year. Provision for the remainder of the cost is to be made in next year's estimates.
