SANDERS CUP DEFENDER
AVALON FOR AUCKLAND CONTEST BEGINS JANUARY 28 Avalon, the 14-foot Jellicoe boat which captured the Sanders Memorial Cup for Auckland in last year’s contest, has been selected to defend the cup at the forthcoming contest on the Waitem&ta in January. This decision was made at last evening’s meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association. Avalon was the only boat nominated, and trials will therefore be unnecessary. Avalon is owned by Mr. F. Cloke. The selection of the crew lias been left in the hands of a committee of three. To meet the wishes of Southern competitors it was decided to fix the date of the first race tentatively for Tuesday, January 2s. This will enable the Southland, Otago and Canterbury representatives to take part in the Wellington regatta on their way north. The chairman or the association, Mr. C. H. T. Palmer, who is sparing no effort to ensure the success of the contest, both from the racing and entertainment aspects reported that there was prospect of very good support from the clubs. An arrangement had been made with excursion boat-owners that Is out of each 2s 6d collected from passengers viewing the racing would be given toward the contest funds. According to the rules governing the cup the names of the boats taking part in the contest must be nominated 21 days before the first race. Eileen lias already been chosen to represent Otago, and trial races are now being carried out by Canterbury, Southland and Wellington for the purpose ol' selecting their challenger.
