ON THE MANUKAU

Dione, on© of the fastest boats on the Manukau, is being brought over to the Waitemata today. Her owner, Mr. Seccombe, and party propose to cruise the sword-fishing grounds during the approaching holidays. Dione will be taken back to the western harbour in time to compete in the second Kermath Cup race this season.

Mr. Coulthard, of Onehunga, has almost completed a handsome launch hull for a Waitemata owner. A 60h.p. Kermath unit has oeen installed. The hull is V-bottomed and has a length of 40ft. The new boat will be ready for the Christmas cruise.

Mr. Hudson, the resolute yachtsman on the Manukau, has had a bout with pneumonia, which accounts for the fact that the name of Waitere 11. has not figured in the sailing lists on the Waitemata so far.

On December 21 the Manukau Yacht Club will hold a resail of the race on the first day of the season. The club also stages its annual launch race for women. The course is the usual harbour run. The sailing race of the Manukau Yacht Club was a test of weather and tide lore. A stiff westerly veered round to the sou’-west in the late afternoon, but even then on the last leg the boats got out spinnakers. Sea Toiler went away on her handicap, Gannet, late of Waitemata, Nyria, Daphne and Drone (scr.) following. Before the first round Daphne replaced Gannet, Sea Toiler refused to be passed and the second round order was Sea Toiler, Daphne, Nyria, Drone, Gannet. On the turn for the last leg Daphne was catching up on Sea Toiler, which got out the spinnaker, and, after a rocking from a passing service boat, began to look for soft places in the tide. Daphne should have done the same and made more use of her spinnaker; in fact, it was her race if sufficient energy had been displayed. As it was the lead of 10 sec held by Sea Toiler at the last turn became 46sec at the end. In the 12ft 6in class Tuatea won easily.

The Manukau Cruising Club held its 12-miles cruising races to Cornwallis on Saturday. The weather did not. stop five launches competing for the Gilmore Oil Company’s Cup. Elma. though missing the second buoy and having to lose 2min going back to it, managed to get home first, but on corrected times, the race end was Tawera, Elma, Regal; Tawera having 40min allowance. In the yacht race Una, Sea Horse and Roma were on the line in time; Sylvia. Champagne and Miss Mac arrived late. Sylvia had the lead at French Bay; and with a lead home was first to salute the judge.
