MILNES AGAIN

ANNUAL INTER-HOUSE ROWING FARMERS’ CREW SWAMPED I In very choppy water Milne and j Clioyce’s crew, for the fourth time in j succession, won the annual inter- j house rowing fours on Saturday. The race, which is rowed for a cup presented by Mr. A. Court, has been won by Milne and Choyce every year since its inception. Four crews were j entered this afternoon, but the Farmers’ crew swamped three times crossing the bay to the starting point off Orakei and was forced to abandon the race. Crews raced from Milne and Choyce, Macky Logan’s and Sargood, Son and Ewen. Mr. W. G. Mason was starter and Mr. A. Wilson was judge. The race finished off the Akarana sheds and the oarsmen had anything but a pleasant experience in rowing the race on bad water and blinded with squalls. The crews were: Milne and Choyce.—V. Smith, R. Cruickshank, T. McCarthy, R. Wheatcroft. Sargood, Son and Ewen. C. D’Authreau, F. Solomon, L. Hay, G. Jonson. Macky, Logan.—R. Woods, H. Little, P. Williams, A. Barry. Farmers’ Trading Co. —L. Paterson, J. R. Skinner, J. Henderson, A. Anderson. Stow (cox). Almost at the first stroke. Milne’s bow came off his seat and Maoky’s were first away. After the first 200 yards Milne’s nosed ahead by a canvas. Off the Point Milne’s were a length ahead of Sargood’s. Cruickshank lost his oar and Sargood’s came up to within half a length. It was a close go all the way down the straight, but Smith swung his crew along in great style to win by twothirds of a length. Macky’s were well behind Sargood’s, third. HUGH WRIGHT FOURS WAITEMATA TRIALS ROWED Braving intermittent showers of rain and very bad water, six crews from Waitemata rowed trials for the Mr. Hfigh Wright, vice-president's trophies on Saturday. The bad weather recommended the use of the short course along the tide deflector. Mr. H. Cullen was judge. The crews were:—G. Barker, E. B. Gladding, M. N. Pierce, R. Allen; W. Eaddy, J. Stevenson, C. H. Hunt, J. C. Allingham; R. Smith, H. J. Russell, C. C. Cairns, P. Usher; L. E. Brooker, E. H. Bishop, PI. J. Lawrence, G. Howard; C. Fearon, H. N. Hunt, F. F. Simmons, E. Evans; C. P. Belton, H. J. Beasley, A. Edwards, P. Usher. First heat: Eaddy beat Barker bv three-quarters of a length. Smith was half a length back, third. Second heat: Brooker beat Fearon by a quarter of a length. Belton was a canvas behind, third. It was a great finish between Brooker’s crew with Bishop in stroke seat, and Fearon’s crew. Belton lost ground by steering too wide a course. Final: Eaddy’s crew was rearranged for the final, Stevenson going- to stroke seat, while Eaddy rowed at three. Bishop again stroked Brooker’s crew. The race resulted in a dead heat. COOPER PAIR-OARS EXCITING RACES AT WEST END Unpremeditated novelty turns added excitement to a set of pair-oar trials rowed by West End on Saturday for trophies donated by Mr. R. H. Cooper, an honorary member of the club. Eight crews entered, but the races were rowed on a falling tide and bad water was an additional disadvantage. MacFarlane and G. Bloxham were leading by three lengths from Bryan and Rogers in the first semi-final, when Bioxham’s oar snapped. As the line was only 20 yards distant, the leading crew struggled on. Bloxham paddling desperately with the stump of his oar. Bryan took a new interest in the race and came up to win by a very narrow margin. A.s he reached the line his boat capsized, but he had won the race. First Heat.—V. MacFarlane and G. Bloxham (scr) beat F. Conway and M. Taylor (2s) by one and a-half lengths. Second Heat.—J. Rogers and F. Brvan (21s) beat M. McCarthy and R. YVitten (17s) by half a canvas. McCarthy was unfortunate in coming off his slide. Third Heat.—M. Conway and A. Dalton (9s) beat A. C. Norden and C. Aitken (4s) by a considerable distance. Aitkin came off his seat at the launch wharf. Fourth Heat.—G. Cowan and O. Felton (4s) beat R. Woodside and F. Baker (2s) by about two feet, after the best race of the day. Semi-finals.—Bryan beat MacFarlane after an unusual race, as already described. M. Conway beat Felton by half a length. Final.—M. Conwky and A. Dalton beat F. Bryan and J. Rogers by two feet. EVENTS POSTPONED After two races had been decided for the George Cup single sculls handicap, it was decided by the members of St. George’s Rowing Club to continue the event later in the week. There were 20 entrants. Following are the results of the two races already sculled:—J. Hargreaves (scr) beat V. Dunne (225); F. Hislop (48s) beat C. Kelleway (12s). Fours for the Challenge Cup, to have been rowed by the North Shore Club, were postponed, as the club had lent a boat to Milne and Choyce’s crew for the inter-house race. AUCKLAND RACING

Owing to the rough water Auckland trials for the Kohn Challenge Cup were postponed. Regatta crews from the club were training during the weekend.
