PROTRACTED SURVEY
SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK WORK ON NORTHERN END From Our Resident Reporter WELLINGTON, Today. The protracted work on the survey of the South Island Main Trunk is now drawing to a close and constructional work is within measurable distance of beginning. Difficult country on the southern end of the new railway link has made the task of surveying and performing grade tests for alternative routes one of more than usual difficulty. Here the survey has been finished and the grade tests checked, while the route which the new line will follow on this section is now practically determined. In the North, however, work proceeds and no delinit- date for completion can be given by the Public Works Department. The northern end, however, sees formation work steadily pushed ahead. A total of IS2 men, r’ out half of them relief workers, is employed here. When the construction will begin on a large scale Is shortly to be largely a matter for the Government to decide.
