The President, Mr. Hoover, .todav conferred with the heads of the eon- ; struction industries, who told him there would lie at least £220.000.000 j expended in State and Federal road 1 building, with a further £220,000.000 spent by counties and municipalities, not including other public and private construction work. The railway managers at Chicago; telegraphed saving they would buv more than 2.500,000 tons of steel in the coming year. The President's appeal has been sent to the Governors of ali the States, asking them to follow the example of the Federal Government in speeding up the necessary construction work, to absorb the unemployed and contribute to rite nation’s consuming power. The President says the Federal Government is prepared to exert itself to the utmost within its own province, and it desires the co-operation of the other authorities ir. a similar endeavour.
