COALMINING DEADLOCK
AUSTRALIAN DISPUTE STILL UNSETTLED CANBERRA CONFERENCE CANBERRA, Sunday. The coalmining dispute is still unsettled. The conference called by the Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin. between representatives of the Federal and State Governments, the northern colliery owners and the miners, was held at Canberra yesterday, but was adjourned until Wednesday. The miners’ representatives will report upon the proposals which were discussed to their executives on Tuesday. Mr. Scullin says he is hopeful of a successful outcome. The parties are quite friendly. The New South Wales Government had agreed to abstain from reopening the Rothbury colliery until after Wednesday. It is stated on reliable authority that the miners’ representatives are bringing pressure to bear on the Federal Labour Ministry to give financial aid to the miners in order to obviate a reduction in their wages.
