STRIKE OVER
WAGES FOR WESTFIELD WORKERS DETAILS OF AGREEMENT Following the various negotiations which took place on Saturday between the Westfield slaughtermen and the employers, the dispute which resulted last week in a strike was settled. About 100 slaughtermen agreed to the terms of a settlement arrived at in the Town Hall. One of the principal items in dispute was the new award's fixation of the rate for killing pigs at about 3Jd a head, the workers complaining that Is 5d to Is lid was being paid elsewhere. The strike began last Wednesday and the men returned to work on Friday afternoon, on the understanding that the of Auckland, Mr. George Baildon. would consider their representations. On Friday afternoon a conference at the Town Hall resulted in the men rejecting an offer. Another conference was held at 11 a.m. on SaturThe agreement as announced by Mr. Baildon is as follows: —“The award to remain in accordance w'itli the finding of the court, but as an alternative thereto as an arrangement between the parties, a flat rate of • lOd a carcase to be paid for pigs up to 2001 b., and over that weight Is 3d a carcase, provided that the employee executes the whole of the work as provided by the award: that for long-shanked sheep be £2 3s 9d a 100. and for short-shanked sheep and lambs, £1 ISs 9d a 100.
