PAPATOETOE SPORTS
SATURDAY’S MEETING The opening carnival of the recently formed Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, which, is to be held on the Papatoetoe recreation grounds on Saturday, promises to be a decided success. A total of 307 nominations has been received, and it is expected that 213 competitors will be seen in action, making it the biggest athletic event attempted in the district. Nominations have been received from several holding provincial championship honours. Preparations for the meeting are well in hand, and include the formation of a quarter-mile track and a 100yds track, both of which will be finished off with a steam roller. The president of the club, Mr. W. J. Hindman, expressed the opinion that the tracks would compare more than favourably with those on the Auckland Domain, and the support received from athletes was a big encouragement to the club. The programme consists of 19 events, and 2S medals have been awarded for competition. The official opening ceremony will be performed by Mr. A. W. Half, M.P. for Hauraki.
