OPEN GOLF TOURNEY
MAUNGAKIEKIE CLUB TITIRANGI CUP COMPETITION Although ideal weather conditions prevailed and the links were in splendid order, only two players broke 80 in the opening day’s play of the Maungakiekie Golf Club’s tourney at Titirangi on Saturday. The two players to exceed 80 were W. K. Ralph and L. J. Croxson, who both completed for 78 in the afternoon round. The former finished in 81 in the morning, thus giving him a total of 159, which led the field for the championship medal. R. L. Wright was second with 164. The following 16 players qualified for the Titirangi Cup:—J. Hosking, 179, 38— 141; W. J. Thomson, 166, 20 —146; J. Francis, 180, 30—150; J. Murray, 172, 22 — 150; A. B. Joplin, 174, 22—152; G. Tallis, 166, 14—152; L. Rogers, 197, 44 —153; T. Goudie, 176, 28—148; B. Menzies, 169. 16— 204, 50—154; C. Robinson, 179, 24—155; P. Harrison, 192, 36—156; R. McCrystall, 170, 14—156; N. McLean, 186, 30—156; R. J. Hamilton, 173, 16 —157. H. L. Robson 123; C. Bailey, 166, 12—154; J. R. Neill was also 157, but retired in favour of R. J. Hamilton. In the afternoon an 18-holes medal handicap was played in conjunction with the championship medal and qualifying rounds. J. Hosking returned the lowest card, being 89, 19—70. Other cards were: T. Goudie, 86, 14—72; L. J. Croxson, 78, 6—72; R. Cleghorn. 91, IS—73; B. Menzies, 81, 8—73; G. White, 90, 17—73. TODAY’S PLAY The Maungakiekie Golf Club’s end-of-season tourney, which started on Saturday, was advanced another stage today at the Titirangi links. Play began at 9 o'clock, when the first pair left the pavilion in a steady shower, which made the greens sodden and promised to mar the play. At 10 o’clock, however, a slight breeze sprang up, and the rain cleared. Conditions were then favourable for j good golf, and this was indicated by ! some of the cards returned. Results are: — TITIRANGI CUP First round.—B. Menzies beat R > Hamilton, 4 and 3; N. McLean beat J. Francis, 1 up; G. Tallis beat W. J. Thompson at the 21st hole; R. McCrystall beat P. Harrison, 3 and 2; C. Robinson beat C. Bailey. 2 and 1; J. R. O’Neill beat L. Rogers, 4 and 3; A. B. Joplin beat J. Hosking. 1 up; J. Murray beat T. Goudie, o and 3. GROUP PLAY No. 1 Group (First Round). —Kamlrup beat Tolhurst, 6—5; Western beat Hutchison, 3—l; Gardiner beat Trice, 1 up: Sandel beat C. Weston, 3—l.
