FIGHTING FOR RUNS
Y.M.C.A. BATS AGAINST NORTH SHORE PLAY ON TRICKY WICKET Early morning rain held up play at Devonport until the pitch had dried out. A change in tne wind and a break in the clouds gave the wicket every chance, and Elliott had no hesitation in going in to bat with Lyon when he won the toss from Frater. Play opened quietly with two maidens each to 11. Webb and Player. Elliott moved off first with some strong drives, but the outfield was very dead and the boundary hard to reach. Lyon lifted IT. Webb over the on-boundary lor six, but fell to a smart drive in the slips by Saunders in iate-cutting Coates. —48-1-19. Panther was next, but was tempted out by Saunders for Reid to stump him neatly.—sl-2-1. Elliott started to force the pace, and landed two full drives off successive balls from Saunders well over the boundary. Trying to glance Coates- to leg, El- , liott poked a soft one up to Naismith at silly mid-on, and returned with a useful 45 to his credit.—69-3-45. Sutherland did not last long before mishitting Saunders to point.—73-4-4. The Y.M. batsmen were over-cautious on the sporting sort of pitch, and Kemp soon made the fourth victim of the Saunders-Coates combination. — 74-5-1. Riddolls was lucky to have a let-off at leg in his first over, and was dropped again off Saunders next over. Forcing tactics appeared to be called for in preference to stonewalling, but the batsmen lacked enterprise, and Riddolls had a third narrow escape in missing stumping after going out to Saunders. Ninety came up after two hours’ play, and Don Webb relieved Coates with some tempting slows, but failed to entice the batsmen -to hit. At the luncheon interval Y.M. had lost five wickets for 93.
