Flaming Youth Dances Banned Heebie Jeebies

LANGUAGE AT DANCE HEAVY FINES IMPOSED From Our Own Correspondent OTAHUHU, Today. Fines and costs totalling £2O were imposed on three youths at the Otahuhu Police Court this morning for using obscene language in the Pakuranga Hall on the night of October 5. In evidence, Sergeant Lambert said in respect to a charge against Leo Meanes that he had been dancing the “Heebie Jeebies,” which was a. prohibited dance in the hall, and when asked by the M.C. to stop he swore at him and refused to stop. He was told to go out and again rerused. He then used indecent language a dozen times in front of 150 people. Mr. Norman Double, a bootmaker, who acted as M.C. at the dance, said he warned Meanes to stop indulging in a prohibited dancS ne i put out the accused and another man, but was attacked by a number of people in the hall. The police were then sent for. Douglas White was charged with using obscene language outside the hall on the same night, together with William Anderson. Sergeant Lambert said that the youths attended a dance in the Pakuranga Hall on October 5 and used the language complained of. There was only one constable in the district, and the sergeant asked for a severe sentence. Youths like these made a nuisance of themselves in the district, and took drink to dances and annoyed residents. Constable Nield said he was relieving at Howick and was sent for from Pakuranga Hall. He was speaking to two men who had been put out of the hall when Anderson and White came round the hall screaming out obscene language. He took the accused to Howick. Mr. R. W. Wood, for Anderson, said his client was trying to stop a youth making a irbise. He did use bad language, but it was not directed at the constable. An application for suppression of Anderson’s name Was refused. In fining Meanes £lO and ordering him. to pay £2 5s 5d witness expenses, the magistrate said he had been dealt with lightly by the police, as he could have been charged on three or four charges. White was fined £5 and ordered to pay costs 10s. Anderson was fined £2 and costs 12s. Ivan Kelly, charged with using bad language in the hall, did not appear, and the magistrate ordered a warrant to be issued for his arrest.
