UNEMPLOYED IN NORTH

MINISTERIAL STATEMENT COUNCIL DISSATISFIED Prom (*r Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Saturday. Following upon representations made by the Whangarei County Council the Minister of Public Works lias advised the council that he has obtained a special report regarding unemployment in the north of Auckland. Since April 1 over 400 men in North Auckland had been provided with employment on Government relief works, and over 250 of these had been placed during two months. The employment of an additional 20 men from Whangarei appeared sufficient for the present, and the Minister said he had authorised 10 being placed on the Whangarei Heads road and 10 on the Kiripaka-Xganguru road. Fifty unemployed miners from Hikurangi were also being placed on the latter work. At a meeting of the council Cr. Hayward said lie had hoped that some men would be placed on the Kaigoose road. The chairman said it appeared to be another question in which the wishes of the council had been sidetracked. At a conference between representatives of the county council, borough council and Public Works Department three roads had been decided upon as the most urgent and profitable, and yet no notice whatever had been taken in placing the men. It was decided that the necessity of putting unemployed on the three roads in question be again brought under the notice of the Minister.
