BASKET SOCIAL
MOKAU RESIDENTS AID RELIEF FUND SUCCESSFUL EFFORT A very enjoyable ’ Basket” social in aid of the Earthquake Fund was held by the residents of Helena Bay. Mokau, and Whangaruru, in the Mokau Hall recently. Mr. Tom Martin and an energetic committee had transformed the hall into a veritable bower, with cool greenery and gay decorations. Many gifts were presented to be raffled to help swell the fund. A silk robe-de-nuit by Miss Rawlinson and an iced cake by Mrs. Tom Martin excited keen interest and tickets were eagerly sought. There was spirited bidding for the various beautifully trimmed baskets. The prize, a box of chocolates, given by Mr. W. Clarke for the highest - priced basket, was won by little Miss Edna Martin. Mr. J. Wilson made a most capable and indefatigable M.C., and cheers greeted his announcement at the close of the festivities that the 'quake fund would benefit to the extent of £6O. Considering how sparsely populated these districts are, the effort was highly creditable, and the committee which worked so hard for its success is to be congratulated.
