TEN-PENNY THEFT
MECHANIC WHO “LIFTED” SOME KUMERAS A few kumeras valued at lOd resulted in the appearance of Gordon John Gower at the Police Court this morning on a charge of theft. Gower, a mechanic, aged 27, pleaded guilty to stealing vegetables from Mar Ming Brothers yesterday. According to Senior-Sergeant O’Grady, Gower liad been caught in the backyard of a Chinese shop in the early morning. The Chinese, who left loaded lorries in the yard all night so that they could start early in the morning, had missed quantities of vegetables lately. The Rev. Jasper Calder gave the man a good character. He was married, had two children and had been out of work. He had just found employment and even his landlord, to whom he owed money, was prepared to say a good word for him, said Mr. Calder. Gower was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
