MATAMATA INTERESTS
The monthly meeting of the council of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce was held on Wednesday evening. Mr B. C. Taylor presided. Communications were received from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce asking for assistance in placing town lads on farms. It was agreed to do everything possible. It was also suggested that the Matamata remit approved of by the Auckland body, “That the railway tariff should be placed on a commercial footing and not used as a means of affording preference for New Zealand goods as against those imported of the same character,” should be sem to the New Zealand conference of associated chambers. This is to be done. In answer to a request from th chamber for the free carriage on the railways of parcels consigned to recognised social workers, the Minister re plied that such could already be done if the consignor received a permit from th© local district manager. Messrs. Taylor, Bell and Griffiths were appointed a committee to organise a representative deputation of ratepayers to urge upon the Town Board the immediate necessity for the erection of a new hall.
