50 YEARS OLD

! BUT HE WON DOMAIN SPRINT ALF CLARKE’S DAY Inside an hour on Saturday afternoon an athlete of half-a-century in years won the 75yds sprint, ran second in the six-mile steeplechase and competed in both the shot-putting and discus throwing events at the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting on the Domain. This wonderful performance was put up by Alf. Clarke, than whom there is no more enthusiastic athlete in Auckland. It was a performance which is not often equalled by versatile all-round athletes in their prime, while few men at the age of DO ar still actively engaged in athletics. Saturday’s steeplechase was in the nature of a try-out for the New Zealand cross-country championships at Dunedin at the end of this month. The entrants were set off in sections to give practice in the art of team running. The first section provided the first man home in C. R. Wilson, with Clarke close on his trail. The leaders of the last pack were Kells and Savidan, although neither made any strenuous effort in the final dash to the tape. Results are as follow: 75 YARDS HANDICAP A. Clarke (14yds) 1 A Sheat (BJyds) 2 L. C. Barker (IOT-yds) 3 Won by a yard. Time, S 2-5. Eight started. STEEPLECHASE About six miles. ARE DISAPPOINTING SATURDAY’S RESULTS Unimpressive play marked the first practice match of the Auckland Basketball reps, against Training College on Saturday afternoon. The teachers were not up to form and the reps.' win is nothing to their credit. The attackers and the defensive line were playing a fairly sound game but the centres were lacking in both steadiness and combination. The association’s inter-club competitions were continued. On account of the Wellesley Street School grounds being used by Bov Scouts the matches were played at the Newmarket School and in the Drill Dali in addition to the usual courts used. Senior matches were marked by some mediocrity for the first time this season. Players who did show up were .Misses W. Haydon (centre for Y.W.C.A.) and J. Nagle (goal for Training College).
