BURGLAR’S FUTILE WORK

ATTEMPT TO OPEN SAFE APPARENTLY DISTURBED (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Friday. Some time after 11 o’clock on Thursday night, the office of the Hikurangi Dairy Company was entered by thieves who forced open the back door. A large safe weighing half a ton was turned round in the middle of the room, apparently with the intention of removing it bodily. The handle was wrenched off, but the lock was too much for them and the door was not opened. It is thought that the thieves, finding it impossible to open the safe in the building, commenced moving it to the door with the object of taking it away, when they were disturbed. Had the intruders been successful in opening the safe they would have found only a few shillings were left in the safe that night.
