TAMAKI DISTRICT

RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION MEETS NO BRANCH LIBRARY That there was at present no possibility of a library being built in the district, was the opinion of the executive of the Tamaki Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association, presented at the annual meeting of the association recently. The city librarian, Mr. James Barr, had visited the executive. It had been suggested that a van should be fitted out as a lending library to visit the outer suburbs. The van would be available shortly and would pay periodic visits to St. Heliers. A report on the transport problem was made by Mr. R. E. Fawcett, who reviewed the action taken by the Transport Board in regard to the petition organised by the association. The association had sought a separate fare for women, but Mr. Keys did not agree, and in this he had been supported by Mr. J. A. C. Allum and other officers of the Transport Board. The reduction for school children had not been opposed by Mr. Keys, but by the Transport Board. The chairman, Mr. F. C. Jordan, presented the executive’s report. He said the Minister of Marine, the City Council and the Auckland Harbour Board had been communicated with in connection with the St. Heliers Wharf. The executive had requested that the existing wharf be retained, but the chairman of the Harbour Board could not agree to this.
