Regarding the work of renewing access in the Murchison district, the Public Works Department’s district engineer, Mr. L. May, stated today that the Glenhope-Murchison Road is now passable to vehicles up to six tons, including the weight of the vehicle. On the Murchison-Reefton main highway, construction work is proceeding between Six Mile and Eight Mile Creeks. In spite of the arrangement to take 50 refugees on this work, only a few have taken advantage this opportunity and most of the labour has been obtained from outside. A stock track has been opened into Lower Maruia over Doughboy, and a similar track has been made up Mangles and Nuggety Valleys. A track up the right bank of the Owen River has been made, and work on a track up the left bank is in hand. The Gowan Road track has been completed. Work is in hand on a sixfoot track to provide access to midMaruia, via Shenandoah. A start has been made on the work of opening the track through the Buller Gorge from Murchison. The rate at which construction will proceed will depend on the settlement or otherwise of the country.'
