SENTENCE COMMUTED
MAN WHO MURDERED POLICEMAN ADELAIDE, Thursday. The death sentence passed on John McGrath, aged 23, on July 12 for fatally shooting Constable Holman oil February 25, has been commuted to imprisonment for life with hard labour. The jury had recommended accused to mercy. Constable Holman and another constable on February 25 stopped two men to question them. Suddenly on© of the men drew a revolver, shot Constable Holman and ran away. The second policeman shot the retreating man in one leg. Two other officers then appeared on the scene and several more shots were fired. Constable Holman was taken to hospital, where ho I died.
