SHIP ABANDONED
CREW VAINLY BATTLES WITH FLAMES WARSHIP RACING TO AID (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.55 a.m. CAPETOWN, Friday. Fire in two holds of the steamer King Cadwallon spread rapidly and the efforts of the crew to fight the flames proved unavailing. The ship was abandoned. The flagship Calcutta, which was at Durban and which was ordered to rush to the crew’s assistance, left this evening. A Sydney message yesterday said: News has been received in Sydney that a fire has broken out in the hold of the steamer King Cadwallon, which was en route from Durban to Adelaide. vm vessel, which is bringing coal from England to Australia, has been ordered back to Durban. The King Cadwallon is one of the King Line fleet, of London. She is a vessel of 5,119 tons, and was built at Hong-Kong in 1920.
