MORE BUTTER

PRODUCTION SHOWS BIG INCREASE COOL STORE FIGURES Against 1,595,95 S for the corres- j ponding period last year, 2,150,024 boxes of butter were recieved into cool store at the Auckland Farmers’ Freez- 1 ing Company’s works at Southdown and Auckland from July 1, 1925, to June 12 of this year. So Mr. J. E. Makgill, chairman of directors of the company, told members of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday when they visited the works. This represented an increase of 254.066 boxes, or ' 13.4 per cent. The number of crates of cheese received totalled 151.065, against 148,462 in the previous season, an increase of 32,603 crates, or 22 per cent. Expressed in terms of butter-fat the butter and cheese received this season re- ] presented 111,471,4681 b., against j 97,600,8251 b. for the corresponding | period last season. This was an increase of 13,870,6431 b., or 14.2 per cent., and the value of the increase, calculated at 1s 6d a lb., totalled over £1,000,000. This represented an accretion of wealth not only to the producers, but to the whole country. The season ended on June 30, so there would not be much alteration in the returns for the whole season. Mr. Makgill said the increase was due mostly to the greater amount of top-dressing done and the better selection of cows rather than to the bringing in of new country. With more intensive methods being used there was no saying how far the increase would : continue. Mr. Makgill also gave details of the fat stock passing through the company’s works to June 12, compared with the period to June 12 of last season. The figures for this season were as follow, those for last season being given in parentheses:—Pigs, 110,156 (53,094); bobby calves. 107,532 (31,578); lambs, 176,162 (155,907); sheep. 9,010 (14,312); cattle, 6,355 (12,047). The party comprised over 100 persons. and included 20 pupils of Wesley College, Paerata. In addition to the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company’s works the New Zealand Cattlecake and Oil Company’s mill at Westfield and the Challenge Phosphate Company’s fertiliser works at Otahuhu were visited. On behalf of the party the president of the society, Mr. E. Allan, returned thanks to the various firms for hospitality and courtesy shown to the party.
