OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL
A recommendation from the Manukau County Council that the Kaka Street overhead bridge on the boundary of the two districts should be widened, and the approaches be widened to be made safer, was received at last evening’s meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council. The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, prepared plans and estimates of the proposed w-ork, and stated the i cost would be in the vicinity of £645. , | The recommendation was referred to the Works Committee to report to the council. A donation of £2 2 s was made vo the Social Service Board of the Diocese of Auckland, which has control of the Orphans’ Home, Papatoetoe, Children’s Home, Ponsonby, and St. i Mary’s Homes, Otahuhu. The Local Government Loans Board I gave its sanction to the council raising ! a loan of £SOO for the paying of the ‘ compensation agreed upon in respect of J two strips of land being dedicated by 1 Messrs. Trendall Bros., to widen Princes ! Street and Empire Lane respectively. Permission was granted the Auckj land Hospital Auxiliary to hold a j street collection in the borough on I Friday, June 28. j .V letter was received on behalf of j Mr. W. J. Doran, advising that he had | agreed to reduc© his compensation i claim for land taken for the formation j of a road from £l5O to £SO, together 1 with legal expenses incurred amount- | ing to £lO 10s. It was agreed to adhere to the previous decision of the ; council to pay compensation amounting j to £25. Mr. G. V. Pearce, chairman of the Works Committee, submitted a proposal that the council raise a loan of £I,OOO for the relief of unemployment in the borough, and that application be made to the Government for a subsidy, j On the recommendation of Mr. Felon 1 it was decided that the council affirm | the principle of raising an unemployed relief loan of £I,OOO, and the question Ibe referred to the Works Committee, j to bring forward a report to the next j meeting.
