NOT DESERTER
AUSTRALIAN WITH OTHER MAN’S PAPERS UNKNOWN N.Z. MISSION Charged with deserting from the Ruahine at Wellington on August 24, James Augustus McCauley, described as a ship’s’ fitter, aged 49, pleaded not guilty in the Police Court this morning. Chief-Detective Hammond asked leave to withdraw the charge, as there was no evidence to offer. "This man’s real name is Rossiter,” said the chief detective. "He came over from Australia on the Ulimaroa last trip under the name of McCauley. He had McCauley’s papers, and applied for a passport under that name. There was a warrant out for McCauley for deserting from the Ruahine, and this man was arrested. He has a considerable amount of money in the bank and a wife in Australia. What his mission is nobody knows.”
