ARISTOCRACY

Dogs and Cats Show | Their Quality DISDAIN AND CHEER Disdainful dogs, cheerful dogs and extraordinarily supercilious cats are gazing from over 100 cages today.

r JMIEY are at the Auckland Toy Dog Club’s eighth annual cat and dog show in the Newmarket Town Hall. Persian cats, plump and pampered, preen themselves in their vanity as they lounge on silken cushions; alert Pomeranians prance delightedly if they sight friends in the crowd. Then there are pugdogs, heavy with self-importance, and even a representative of the schipperke breed from the barges of Belgium. Pekingese look their proudest. They have Oriental aristocracy and know it perfectly well. Pekes, the watchers admit, have an unusual degree of aloofness. Not unlike the Pekes, King Charles spaniels rest with a superb air of importance. They, too, are aristocrats, and they do not join in the rowdy chattering of the Pomeranians. The spaniels remain in remarkable unconcern while all about them is the hurry-scurry of the show. BEST YET There is something for the Pomeranians and the Pekingese to be proud ol', because Mr. Norman Wade, judge of the dogs, considers that they are of the best quality exhibited at any toy dog show in New Zealand. Champion animals from every part of the North Island have been attracted in the club’s challenge classes. Mrs. J. H. Baggott, judge of the cats, also praises her section. Today, owners and spectators are flocking round the animals. But no amount of petting can arouse excitement in the cages. Blue blood is rarely disturbed. After two days in such an atmosphere of dignity—the show is continuing until tomorrow night—even the perkiest Pomeranians may be subdued. No effort is spared for the comfort of the furry exhibits. The women’s committee, headed by Mrs. S. Moore, has decorated the cages. Show arj rangements are in the hands of Mr. George Hunt, club secretary, and Mr. Joseph Cowley, show manager. Meanwhile, the show is attracting a steady attendance. There is much to interest in these products of scrupulous selection and careful breeding. Pedigrees with imposing names testify to the excellence of the dogs and cats. The Pokes, in particular, have another impressive testimonial. They have singing Chinese names. The public appreciates the bizarre element. But the dogs will have to give way to the cats for unflinching poise. It takes a good deal to break down a cat’s barrier of reserve.
