MAN REMANDED ON THEFT CHARGE “CONTEMPTIBLE ACT” A theft, described by Subinspector McCarthy as contemptible, was committed by Thomas Roy Hopkins, who appeared in the Police Court this morning. Hopkins, aged 35, was charged with stealing vegetables valued at Is Sd on June 13. Mr. Singer appeared for him and entered a plea of guilty. “Yqu can see he has iieen drinking,” remarked counsel, indicating his client. “He lives opposite the shop and says he can’t remember anything about the affair. Probably he went in to get some celery for breakfast, or something.” Sub-Inspector McCarthy had a poolopinion of Hopkins. “He had the money in his pocket,” he said. “The shop is in Khyber Pass.” The subinspector expressed himself as "doubtful of Hopkins’s identity.” He said that Hopkins was to be classed with shop-lifters. “This is a different sort of thing,” commented Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. “I think we should remand him until tomorrow to let him get the drink out of him. Perhaps the day after would be better.” Mr. Singer: We shall be chewing celery ourselves then, I hope. The Magistrate: Of course. I forgot it was Sunday.
