PROTECTING THE PORT
BOARD DISCUSSES BRIDGE PROPOSAL REPRESENTATION WANTED The Auckland Harbour Board’s attitude toward the proposed harbour bridge is to be brought under the notice of the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward. It was decided at yesterday's meeting of the board to forward a letter embodying resolutions passed by the board last year. It is asked that the board be represented on any commission set up by some harbour engineer of standing, either nominated or approved by the board. The resolutions previously passed are summarised as follow:—The bridge is not a harbour work to which the board should be asked to contribute; while not opposed to the bridge, the board must protect the present and future requirements of the port; the height, site and type of the bridge should not be settled without the board’s approval or until after the decision of a tribunal on which the board has substantial representation; the site will require careful consideration, the board having been advised by its engineer and harbourmaster that the site suggested is not satisfactory.
