QUEER SWISS BELIEFS

IN EMIL JANNINGS’S NEW STORY | Interesting information concerning the manner of life of different peoples 1 all over the world is collected by the : research department of the Paramount studios in Hollywood. Motion pictures of the present day deal with life in , almost any country under the sun, and it is essential that local details should be accurately portrayed. Emil Jannings’s latest picture for Paramount, “Betrayal,” deals with life in the Swiss Alps, and an interesting i point was brought to light while investigations were being made prior to , the filming of the picture. In the Alps a man’s wealth is gauged by the size and appearance of his stove. The stove is the most important item of furniture in the Alpine villager’s home. It is made of tile or stone, and the fire is kept burning from early autumn until late spring. In humble homes the stove is simple, but in the dwellings of the wealthy it is often very ornate. Other featured members of the cast of “Betrayal” include Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper. Paramount will release sound-synchronised and silent versions of the production. Some of the scenes of Paramount’s all-talking picture, “The Studio Murder Mystery,” will show how a talking film is made. The story of this production centres round the murder of a well-known motion picture star. Paramount is now filming the picture at Hollywood with Doris Hill, Warner Oland, Frederic March and Xeil Hamilton in the cast. William Freshman, the handsome Australian lad, who has been appearing in several successful British films of late, is shortly to be seen in Cinema Art Films’ latest release “Widecombe Fair.” adapted from Eden Phillpots’ well-known story. He is also to have the leading role in the new British International picture, “Mary Was Love,” by Manning Haynes.
