NEW LYNN TOWN BOARD

j The New Lynn Borough Council met j on Monday evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. ! F. Gardner, presiding. i A report on the financial position, as at March 31, 1929, was made by Mr. E. Greenslade, late town clerk to the New Lynn Town Board. The report stated the expenditure in the general account was particularly heavy, some £2,300 having been expended on street maintenance, while the costs of working the roading plant, including £450 for the j purchase of a roller, amounted to j £1,239. After deducting the first year’s in- ‘ terest and sinking fund in connection i with the streets improvement loan, the ! streets loan account was overspent to 1 tho extent of £93. which had been balanced by a transfer from the general account. It would, therefore, be necessary to include in the streets works • estimates for the ensuing year an , amount sufficient to complete the i work commenced in Smith Street. The j council would require to give special i attention to the waterworks account, which had commenced with a debit : balance of £ 1,800, and had closed with jan adverse book balance of £ 3.600. i While the outstanding revenue would, probably cover the past year’s expenditure. it did not provide anything toi ward the reduction of the previous , debt. j The present water rate was calcui la ted at an amount sufficient to meet ! waterworks maintenance only. but ; since the exhaustion of the loan money for water reticulation, all extensions | had been made out of revenue, with [ the result that a debit balance had • been steadily growing. There were a large number of ratepayers who were paying for not more than 12,000 gallons a year, and many who were only paying for some 6.500 gallons a year. It was evident that the water rate should be increased to at least 3d in the pound. The Department of Interna* Affairs advised that the cost of the recent commission in connection with the i formation of the borough amounted to ! £ 20A donation of one guinea w.as nvadp to the New Lynn Soccer and ; ! Club.
