NORTHCOTE HIGHWAYS
CONCRETE SCHEME DEFERRED Lake and Onewa Roads, Xorthcce, having been declared main highways, a subsidy of £ for £ for permanent construction, or £3 for £1 for maintenance has been offered by the Main Highways Board. It is the opinion of Cr. F. Wilson that the financial position of the borough does not warrant the permanent construction in concrete? of Lake and Onewa Roads on the £ for £ basis j offered, and that the £ 3 for £ 1 offered for maintenance will meet the requirements of the borough for the time being. At last evening’s meeting of tho council he moved: “That in view of the substantial cost to ratepayers to be incurred by a reconstruction scheme on the permanent basis, by comparison with the maintenance scheme, that this council is of opinion that no further action be taken in respect of the loan proposals on the permanent The speaker said the works proposed aggregated £32,571. of which the council would have to find nearly £20,000. The Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, suggested that Cr. Wilson supply the town clerk with a copy of his data, and each member Df the council would be provided with a copy. The question could then be fully considered in committee at an early date. This was agreed to.
