THEFT OF A HORSE

CHARGE AGAINST MAORI (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. A Maori, Whare Matangi,' otherwise known as Whare Hickey, was charged before Mr. Justice Herdraan in the Supreme Court today with the theft of a horse valued at £lO, the property of the Motu-Taringamutu Totara Timber Company. According to Mr. H. T. Gillies, for the Crown, the horse in the t case was a peculiarly marked one, which was easily recognisable by employees of the timber company, not only by its markings, but from scars of injuries. It had been in the possession of the company for some years. It was missed from the company’s bush camp at Oruaiwi about Easter time, and later was found being worked by an employee of Robert Ford. Evidence would be brought to show that the prisoner sold the horse to one Ford. Evidence of identity of the animal was given by two employees of the company, who had worked the animal daily for eight years. Robert Ford said the prisoner sold him the horse for £l2. Prisoner, in a statement to the police, said the horse was one he had had from a colt. (Proceeding.)
