WHO’S WHO IN FIELD

STRONG DOMINION TEAM The most noticeable feature of the nominations for the Grand National Hurdle and Steeplechase at Flemington in July is the big representation from other States and New Zealand—especially the Dominion. Xo fewer than 44 outside nominations have been received, writes a Victorian scribe. That the action of the V.R.C. in increasing the Steeple prize to £5,000 added money is appreciated by owners is evident. Xew Zealand sportsmen have responded well, and in the cross-country event Dominion stables have seven representatives, while that country has six in the hurdles. Whether many of these will run cannot be said, but Mr. W. Garrett, owner of Zircon, intimated while in Australia for the Great Eastern Steeple that he might return for the National. Zircon is apparently a first-class steeplechaser. Tie was running second to Laurelmond in the Onkaparinga race, when he came down toward the end of the race. Wedding March, who has been nominated for the Hurdle and Steeple, won the New Zealand Great Xorthern Hurdles :in 1927, so that his qualifications as a jumper must be respected. Tuki. who was nominated in Sydney, will race in Xew Zealand interests. He has been successful at Randwick. and while in his own country captured the Xew Zealand Grand National Steeplechase. N.S.W. Entries The New South Wales steeples representation is decidedly weak, but that State was always poor in fencing talent. though the Sydney division is likely to put up a showing in the hurdles. The only steeples entry received from the A.J.C. office, outside that of Tuki, was Samphire, and he has a strong Queensland flavour. There are seven hurdles nominations from Sydney, which include the wellperformed May Day, Bagpipes, Dr. Grace and W.B. South Australia’s most promising hurdle racer, Cliumree, has been entered and others from that State who have shown form over the battens are Ad on, Bay of Biscay. Tlesley, Huia Park and Longworthy. The Great Eastern Steeples winner Laurelmond figures among the South Australian entries for the Steeples, which include the former New Zealand fencer Sir Roseberry, who is now in Adelaide. The only Tasmanian nomination received was that of Marwa for the Hurdle race. He won the Tasmanian National Hurdles. Only a couple of outstanding jumpers are missing from the local nominations. which include Longlands and Xamera. last year’s winners; Chaumont and Reviser, two of the most brilliant fencers in training: Nyangay and Oral Treaty, who finished behind Namera last year, and Valbee, who was second to Longlands. Johnny Cake. who gained third place in the National Hurdles 12 months ago, is in the Steeples on this occasion.
