CO-OPERATIVE MINING
PARTY STARTING AT AVOCA .(From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Sunday. It is probable that the production of coal will commence at the Avoca mine shortly. A syndicate of miners under Mr. T. Burley, who holds an underviewer's ticket allowing for the employment of 20 men, has secured the mineral rights over 840 acres. The eight men in the party were among those who were unsuccessful in balloting for employment at Wilsons Collieries when the Hikurangi Coal Company's mine was closed down. All labour will be non-union. The deputation which waited on the Hobson County Council this week is confident that reasonable terms will be made. While the council could not see its way to grant a straight-out reduction in royalties, it listened with attention to a proposal to supply metal for the half-mile construction between the mine-head and the road. The miners said tlfey were prepared to do the work themselves, and finally it was decided that the engineer and the riding member should inspect the road after six months, and investigate the effects of the cartage. The mine is situated six and a-half miles from the Tangowahine Wharf.
