HIGHWAY NECESSARY
CROSSING SOUTHERN ALPS EARLY CONSTRUCTION URGED Press Association REEFTON, Today. A party of 20 Canterbury representatives arrived at Reefton on Saturday night via Lewis Pass to inspect the route of the proposed main highway. They expressed themselves delighted with the easy grade and wonderful scenery, and attended a large public meeting. The county chairman presided. The following resolution was passed unanimously: “That this meeting of representatives from Canterbury and the West Coast affirms the national importance of the speedy construction of a motor road between Canterbury and the West Coast by way of the Lewis Pass; also representations made by a general Government order to have the work undertaken on an adequate scale immediately and carried on without delay until its completion. Further, that copies of the resolution be sent to M.P.’s for Canterbury, Westland and Nelson with a request that they take all possible steps to have this national highway constructed.” The delegation left Reefton for Canterbury yesterday, returning by the Lewis Pass route.
